I’ve been running (slowly) for a few years now and for a long time thought about joining a running club but never had the confidence to do so. Back in January a friend recommended the Harriers to me and I can honestly say it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done. I may never be the fastest nor the furthest runner, but the group encourages and supports me to be the best I can be – every week. Everyone is welcoming and friendly, offering great tips and advice. Training sessions are varied and offer lots of different routes and types of training. There is a strong team spirit amoungst the Harriers and I’m proud to be a part of it. I can’t recommend them enough. (Nicola)

1 year ago this week I made the bold journey down to The Dome to join the Harriers for my first ever time. I’m quite a confident person and I’ve not had any nerves since my wedding day 9 years ago. But, to put it bluntly, I was ****ing myself. In my head there was going to be all these elite runners and I’d be there as the newbie stood on my own in the corner not knowing anyone. How wrong was it!?! I first met Simon Rayner who took me over to Lynn Hutchinson (who then embarrassed me by getting everybody to applaude the newcomer!). Everybody was so welcoming and I’ve absolutely loved my first year. Its a brilliant club and I wish I joined earlier. The mix of abilities and support is amazing. Joining the Harriers 12 months ago is one of the best decisions I’ve made recently and I feel like a solid club member and proud to fly the Harriers flag. Onwards and upwards for the next 12 months. I have always loved going the gym and trying to keep myself fit, but since having had some major surgery a few years ago I have struggled to get back to fitness. I joined the Harriers 6 months ago and even though I am normally towards the back of the groups I run in there is always an encouraging word from friends that recognise your struggles. The enthusiasm, support and passion within the group is refreshing and addictive. I have never before seen so many sincere smiling faces on club nights, and although I have never been a natural runner I’m starting to think like this is something I can do. (Anthony)

I have always seen lots of Danum Harriers vests at my local Parkrun and always thought I would like to join a group like that but it would be too selective. How wrong was I!! From the 1st interaction everyone has been friendly, helpful and most importantly for me, welcoming. I attended 2 sessions and then joined immediately after as I was so impressed, people actually remembered my name and took time to speak to me. I am a shy person, so this meant a lot! I am looking forward to lots more runs and events and wearing my vest with pride and want to thank everyone for making it a great thing to be a part of. (Michael)

A couple of years ago I started running to try to get fitter and lose some weight, and was really pleased with my progress, but plodding the pavements alone got a little soul destroying after a while so I felt I needed some focus to keep going. After a difficult time in my personal life I took the advice of some fellow parkrunners and gave Danum Harriers a try. Having sampled other running clubs, I knew from the first session that the Harriers were the club for me. On arrival I was greeted in a friendly and helpful manner and introduced to everyone as they arrived for that evening’s run. The atmosphere was fun and friendly, smiles all around and I knew already this was the club for me. They’re not bad at the running bit too, since joining the club my times have plummeted and my fitness and confidence have improved significantly, I couldn’t be prouder to wear the blue and yellow club colours every time I race in them. I have never been the most athletic of people and after seeing some rather embarrassing photos of myself after my brothers stag do I thought I really need to sort my self out or I won’t see my 40s. I started running locally on my own and was for ever finding excuses not to go, oh the weather is bad, my legs hurt, I’m tired from my shift at work etc etc. I took myself to my first ever Doncaster Park Run and i noticed a large group stood together laughing and chatting with many in blue and yellow tops and this stuck in my mind. I then talked myself into joining a running club and Danum were top of the list. I arrived towards the end of summer and felt very self conscious thinking I was a sumo wrestler joining a team of Mo Farahs but from evening 1 I was made very welcome. I was never made to feel second best despite clearly never going to be challenging for medals at events Danum were partaking in. I now plan my work and social events around training or racing with Danum! Last year I entered my first 10k and even half marathon events which before I joined would never had happened even in my wildest dreams. 2019 will see me step it up another level again and this is all because of the people who inspire and motivate me in Danum Harriers. I have a real sense of pride pulling on the blue and yellow vest for events and want people to know i’m part of this running club.
